Whilst most dive resorts around the world don't allow people to go solo diving, there are times when, for instance you live by the sea and have no-one to accompany you on a shallow shore dive. Solo diving has historically always been frowned upon, but in recent years attitudes have slowly changed, due to the major diving agencies beginning to offer specific courses for diving by yourself.
The SDI speciality course is very thorough, and discusses equipment issues, gas planning, pros and cons of the buddy system, stress management and self rescue. Managing risk is also a big part of it, as is knowing when solo diving is and isn't appropriate.
The theory and techniques that you will learn on the course are invaluable to any diver. Even if you don't think you will ever go solo, the course will make you a much more attentive, aware, and capable buddy. If you are an underwater photographer or videographer it is simply a must-do course.
